Ok, so…we’ve all had time to process this.  And although it still sickens me to my core, the issue is not without it’s lessons.  All photographers need to take note of this situation and recognize where the line is, and when (and when not) to cross it.  Greenberg got her time in the limelight, and now just a few days later she’s already being shoved back underneath the rock.

All of us photographers want to stand out…we all want to come up with that “thing” that will set us apart from everyone else.  That “style” or “idea” or that particular workflow that pulls us ahead of the pack…I think Greenberg has found out that some of those ideas don’t pull you ahead of the pack, some can immediately pull you out of it.

Part of me feels a bit bad for her, I mean, somewhere in the demented scheming of this plan she thought it would actually make a statement.  She thought it could actually end up saying something meaningful.  And isn’t that what we all want?  To take our art to a place that makes people think differently about the world around them?  I know I’ve come up with many an artistic concept just to have it turn around and fall flat.

Maybe her idea didn’t fall flat though…maybe it was her intention the whole time to shake up the photo community like she has.  Maybe she’s a genius…

One thing is for certain, I’m already tired of hearing about it.  So for this scandal and for Jill Greenberg’s commercial career, there’s only one thing left to say.  Rest in Peace.

I like the monkey images too, Mark.
